Yoga- Nature Cure for Depression and Anxiety

In the recent studies it was found that the ancient form of spiritual, mental and physical discipline that has originated in ancient India is now a nature cure for the treatment of depression and anxiety. This ancient discipline is nothing but Yoga and Meditation. In a recent survey it was found that 6-8 percent of adults have tried yoga at least once in their life time. These days there are a variety of yoga schools and program available in large number. Yoga has become a vast practice across the world. There are different forms of yoga of which Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga is the well-known types. Hatha Yoga is a combination of breath control with asanas and meditation. In 2000s, several studies following continuous studies and research, randomized control trial (RCT), have indicated that yoga provides therapeutic benefits in curing anxiety and depression. Yoga when practised effectively reduces stress response and pain response.

Sudarshan Kriya Yoga which is a controlled breathing technique involving different breathing patterns – slow, rapid, calming, stimulating – followed in a cyclical order. A study compared effects of thirty minutes of Sudarshan Kriya Yoga for six days a week to tricyclic antidepressant imipramine and bilateral electroconvulsive therapy in forty five people hospitalized for depression. After a month of study it was found that sixty seven percent of patients on Sudarshan Kriya Yoga, seventy three percent of patients on imipramine and ninety three percent of patients on electroconvulsive therapy showed relief from depression.

Yoga also showed improvement in life of breast cancer survivors, epilepsy patients and caretakers of people with dementia. Hence Yoga is the best discipline to inculcate in one’s daily routine to avoid stress, depression and anxiety. This also lowers the intake of medicines daily hence helps in nature cure.
